What a wonderful weekend! I hope everyone was able to go outside and enjoy this wonderful weather!

SPELLING
The spelling words are listed below. Don’t forget to study spelling words on Thursday night for the test on Friday.

WORDS FOR FEBRUARY

READING
Our whole group sound for this week is /u/ as in umbrella. Our writing job will be related to various topics that begin with the letter Uu.

Please take advantage of using the Renaissance at home program. You will be able to see the results of the AR tests and Math Facts in a Flash that your child takes. Students can earn "Blount Bucks" for achieving certain math levels. In first grade students will earn five dollars to spend at the Math store each time they have passed five levels. Ex. When they have passed five levels they will get five dollars to spend. When they pass ten levels they will get five more dollars to spend. Please practice hard!! Your child will be able to take practice tests and tests at home but it won’t count towards their achievement level. Only test taken at school will be counted towards earning Blount Bucks. The Math store will only be open the last Friday of the month. Let me know if you have any questions!

MATH
We will begin Chapter 18 on Monday. Homework for math will be lessons 18 in the Practice Math Workbook. Look for the review sheet to come home the night before we test.

LANGUAGE - (DOL)
We have covered rules 1-20 and continuing to practice these rules in sentences each week. I will introduce Rule 22 Monday. Friday’s DOL will be taken for a daily grade.

March 1-5 - Read Across America Celebrating Dr. Suess's Birthday.

Each year schools all across America celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday with Read Across America. We will join in the fun with the following activities each day.

-Monday, March 1: first grade classes will decorate outside our hall in a theme of a book the First Grade teachers choose.

-Tuesday, March 2: DEAR Drop Everything And Read-for 30 minutes. No AR tests, no library-just READING!

Wednesday, March 3: Guest Reader

Thursday, March 4: Character Parade at 1:30. ALL students (and teachers) will dress up as a book character. Don’t go out and buy a costume-be creative and use what you have at home. Students will need a sign (necklace type) with the book and character name. Parents are invited to come and watch. This is a really fun time for the children and a treat for the parents. (More details about the parade to come later)

Friday, March 5: Wear a silly hat for Silly Hat Day in honor of one of Dr. Suess’ most recognizable characters, The Cat in the Hat.

February 16 - 19, 2010

I hope everyone stayed warm this weekend! I heard about all the fun in the snow. What a fun and unexpected winter surprise! We have a lot going on these next few weeks, please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. Also, in the excitement of the weather I forgot to send home signed papers last Thursday, so I sent them home today.

LANGUAGE - (DOL)
We have covered rules 1-19. I will introduce Rule 20-adding s to mean more than one. We are still continuing to practicing Rules 1-19 in sentences each week. Friday’s DOL will be taken for a daily grade as usual. We are going to review specifically Rules 11-16 next week, identifying words as being a noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, compound word and matching the two words to it’s contraction. We will have an activity (worksheet) to choose these words in the context of a simple sentence Thursday. This will be taken as a test grade.

*We have been asked to remind parents not to drop off students before 7:20 am.

*Thanks for all who donated to the Haiti relief fund. We raised just over $3000.00 dollars!!! Way to go Blount!!

I hope your child has been working on Valentine cards. Please have your child bring their valentines to school no later than Friday morning! We will deliver the cards Friday morning before the party so they can enjoy them during the party.

Happy Monday! We had an extremely busy weekend! Filled with lots of fun family birthdays! Look what is going on in first grade this week!

SPELLING
The spelling words for this week are listed below. The spelling grade on the report card will be an average of all the tests given during the nine week grading period, no daily grades will be taken in spelling, so don’t forget to study spelling words on Thursday night for the test on Friday.

MATH
We will test on Chapter 14 tomorrow and begin Chapter 15 on Wednesday. Homework for math will be lessons 15 in the Practice Math Workbook.

** We now have a math store beginning in February. Students can earn "Blount Bucks" for achieving certain math accomplishments. Specific details on how to earn the bucks are coming. Practicing the math facts in a flash on the AR home website would be a great place to start!:)

LANGUAGE - (DOL)
We have covered rules 1-16. Today I introduced Rules 17, 18 and 19, correct use of I, we, us, they and them. We are still practicing Rules 1-16 in sentences each week. Friday’s DOL will be taken for a daily grade as usual.


A Few Reminders:

*We have been asked to remind parents not to drop off students before 7:20 am.

*Our school is helping with the Haiti relief. A notice went home last week explaining it. We will be participating in a cash fund drive. The girls in the school will be in competition with the boys. The drive will last this week only (February 1 - 5). All money collected will go to the American Red Cross to aide victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER UNDERWAY
Catalogs and order forms were sent home Jan. 19 and orders with payments are due Feb. 3.
• Please help your children with their sales efforts and do not allow door-to-door selling without supervision!
• When returning your order, please use the large envelope provided ~ return the top copy only of your
completed order forms, along with check(s) made payable to Blount PTA.
• Extra order forms and catalogs are available in the school office
• Don’t forget to let you child select a prize goal and then indicate their prize choice when your orders are turned in.
