How can we help?

I know that we all have heavy hearts after seeing the devastation that the tornadoes left  last Wednesday.  As I begin reflecting on the horror that all of these families are going through I wanted to help!  After church today our family decided that we would diligently pray for all of those affected but we also wanted to do something tangible.  I wanted my girls to have the experience of helping that they would remember.  We took the list they gave us in church and made a trip to Wal Mart.  I decided to use the gift card that I won from PTA to help these victims. I think that all the children in our class would agree that we are extremely blessed. As I saw pictures of the devastation I know my sweet little first grade friends will be so glad that we shared a little from room 123 at Blount Elementary. With the $50.00 I was able to purchase the following:

10 tubes of toothpaste         1 – 24 pack of water        2 – 10 LB bags of dog food      18 bars of soap               1 pack of 32 count Pampers     10 toothbrushes

As we arrived at Frazer to drop off all our items my eyes just filled with tears.  It was ah-mazing! All I could think was how thankful each family would be to receive these items and how it really is so much better to give than to receive.  My girls were full of questions and I still don’t think they really know how devastating this whole tragedy is, but they were so proud to have had a part of giving back to others in need.  As we left they both wanted to know what else we could do. As we discussed other things our family could do, my heart was so full of joy to see that they really wanted to help and give to others who are in such need.

I was just given the following information:

Frazer United Methodist Church collected donations Sunday from members and community totaling more than $60,000.

On top of the monetary donations, they've collected more than 40 palettes of water, diapers, and other supplies, enough to fill one and a half trailers.

Wow! What an amazing and giving community! I must say it makes my heart smile to see the way everyone comes together in a time of crisis like this~!

While checking out in Wal Mart I met a precious pastor’s wife from Saint James Methodist Church.  She was purchasing school supplies for the children in Tuscaloosa.  She was telling me there were many schools that were damaged, and two that were demolished.  After talking to her and the other first grade teachers I came up with a plan!  St. James has a truck leaving tomorrow and the next truck will be leaving on Friday.  She said they were praying to have enough supplies to start school again a week from tomorrow.  The first grade at Blount is going to have a School Supply Drive to help the children in Tuscaloosa.  Right now they need the very basics:  zipper pouches, crayons, markers, scissors and glue sticks.  We will also be making cards for the children that we are going to send our items to.  If you would like to donate any of these items please send them in this week. We will take them to St. James on Friday. If everyone could send in just a pack of crayons or pack of glue sticks we could help several classes.  Thank you for helping us help others!

On your mark, get set, BOOSTERTHON!!!

Dear Blount Parents,

Can you believe it??  The school year is almost gone.... and we're about to take it up a notch so GET EXCITED!  The Boosterthon Fun Run is coming to Blount Elementary and we could not be more thrilled!  This will be our biggest fundraiser of the year.  The Boosterthon Fun Run promotes fitness, leadership, and character with an overall focus on using teamwork to help our school. Please take a moment and consider what a difference the school and teachers have made in your child’s life and future.

We are so excited about the Boosterthon team being on our campus for two full weeks with a heart and passion to impact students!  With your help, this could be the biggest fundraising effort our school has ever seen!  We hope to see you at the Funrun on Friday, May 13th.  We want to see who will be the most enthusiastic and creative parents out there so come dressed in red, white, and blue with signs to cheer on your all-star!

Thank you so much in advance for all your support and generosity through this fun-filled program!  Please take 1 minute to hear this message from Mrs. Green and Lisa Hoffman about the fun run: http://boosterthoninfo.com/blountelementary/goal of the Boosterthon Fun Run is to raise funds while teaching our kids about the importance of Fitness, Leadership, and Character. Our goal is to raise $35,000 for technology and teacher classroom needs, and we need your help!  We are very excited to have the Boosterthon Fun Run Team on campus this semester, as they will be adding value in so many ways to our students and our school!

The Boosterthon Fun Run is a nine day program that will kick off Wed, May 4th. Please look for the Boosterthon Pledge Manual that will come home with your child on this day, and be sure to visit http://funrun.com to begin entering pledges.

On the last day of the program, ALL students will participate in the Boosterthon Fun Run event which will take place Friday, May 13th.

We need your help!  We are asking parents to connect their student to ten (10) potential sponsors who can pledge a dollar amount per lap or give a flat donation towards their student’s Fun Run. Most students will run somewhere between 25-35 laps at the Boosterthon Fun Run (max laps = 35).  For example, a $5.00 pledge per lap x 25 laps would equal a $125.00 gift to the school.  All checks are made payable to Blount Elementary PTA, due one week after the Fun Run and are 100% tax deductible.  Sponsors will also be able to donate on line.

We ask you to help Blount Elementary in the following three ways:

1.Connect your student to ten (10) potential sponsors who would like to support our school through a pledge per lap or a flat donation (Remember, students will average 25-35 laps).

2.Logon to funrun.com to enter pledges (more information to follow)

3.Join us at the Boosterthon Fun Run event on Friday, May 13th!

Thank you again for being such a wonderful group of parents!  The investment you make in the lives of our students and our school is noticed and appreciated.  Get excited!  We look forward to seeing you at the Boosterthon Fun Run!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am so excited about our upcoming Boosterthon Fun Run! Parents, please mark your calendars for Friday, May 13th so you too can join us as we raise much-needed funds for our school! Our Pep Rally will be this Wednesday, May 4th with the Fun Run  concluding on Friday, May 13th.  Please start securing pledges toward the number of laps your child will complete at the Fun Run.  Most children will average 25-35 laps, 35 being the maximum number of laps. This week more detailed information will come home that will include directions on how to enter your pledges.  Remember all pledges are tax deductible.  If you haven’t yet watched the one minute video featuring Mrs. Green and (our very own PTA President, better known in our classroom as Grace’s mom) Lisa Hoffman.  Please take the time and watch it now. http://boosterthoninfo.com/blountelementary/ I am so excited about this healthy alternative to traditional product sales that can help raise money for our school!
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 13th!
HUGS!
