Book Character Parade!

Dr. Davis Visits 1st Grade

March 29 - April 2, 2010

I'm back! Sorry I haven't updated lately. In between school, family and problems with my computer at home it has been a challenge to try and update. Hopefully everything is worked out and home computer issues are resolved......I think....I sure hope!! Anyway on to the exciting news in our classroom. Spring is in full swing and we are definitely having a great time in Room 123. Check out what we are learning!

SPELLING
The spelling words are listed below. Don’t forget to study spelling words on Thursday night for the test on Friday.

READING
Our whole group sound for this week is /v/ as in volcano. Our writing job will be various topics related to this sound. We will also create our own small volcano!

Please take advantage of using the Renaissance at home program. You will be able to see the results of the AR tests and Math Facts in a Flash that your child takes. I’m strongly encouraging children to take a Math Facts in a Flash test immediately after taking an AR test. Hopefully this will get more students testing on Math Facts.

MATH We will begin Chapter 20.. Homework for math will be lessons 20 in the Practice Math Workbook. Look for the review sheet to come home the night before we test.

LANGUAGE - (DOL)
We have covered rules 1-24 and continuing to practice these rules in sentences each week. We will discuss commas in a series, a rule that is not listed on the Grammar Rules sheet. We will practice this rule in sentences Monday through Friday. Friday’s DOL will be taken for a daily grade.

A Few Reminders:
*Please remind and encourage your child to listen carefully each day and be a kind friend to everyone. We still have things to cover before the end of school so being a good listener is extremely important.

I placed the April Scholastic book order so hopefully the books will be in by the end of the week or the beginning of next week.

Please send in your Easter Eggs numbered 1 - 19. On numbers 6 and 9 please put a line under the number so the children won't get these two numbers confused when hunting eggs. Also, if you would please put a piece of tape around your eggs, they come apart easily. Since there are several classes having egg hunts on Friday, we are going to have ours in the morning. We will hunt our eggs at 10:00, if parents could come help to hide eggs around 9:30 that would be great! Also, we will have a yummy treat that afternoon, Joshua Brantley's mom is bringing some yummy cookies and I am baking some Easter cupcakes. If I could get a volunteer to send in Capri Suns that would be perfect! The weather is supposed to be great, I know the children are going to have a wonderful time!

FUTURE DATES TO KEEP IN MIND

Standardized Testing Dates: March 29-30.
Although First Grade will not be participating in the testing, parent volunteers are not allowed in the building during testing.
Due to testing Tuesday our Library time is cancelled. After testing, children may go to return and check out books. Please be sure to send books to school if they need to be returned. If you are still reading, they may be renewed.
