Tuesday: DEAR Time… Drop Everything And Read.  The children may bring a stuffed animal or doll to school to read with on Tuesday!

Wednesday:  The children can bring a favorite book to share with the class.  I will be reading these the remainder of the week so I may ask them to bring their favorite book several days or they may either leave it at school until we read it. I discovered many new books when the children brought their favorite books in the fall.  I am looking forward to seeing what comes in this week!!

Thursday:  Book Character Parade at 9:30!!  Come dressed as your favorite character from a book.  Don’t forget to make and wear a sign telling everyone what character you are and the book your character is from.

Announcing ~ Happy Tracker!

I don’t know if you have heard but we have a new member in Room 123.  We have a little stuffed…….GROUNDHOG, {also known as a woodchuck or a whistle pig!} B  We have learned so much about this cute little rodent! Needless to say, he has been quite a hit!  We are participating in an online Groundhog Project to see if the groundhog’s prediction is reliable.  Last week we had to come up with a name for our class groundhog.  After lots of discussion and many great ideas we narrowed it down and voted…… Happy Tracker was the winner.  We have a groundhog journal where we are recording the weather and the temperature each day for the next six weeks.  Each week I will enter our data along with classrooms all across North America that are participating in the project.  So stay tuned…….and we will let you know if Happy Tracker’s prediction was correct this year.

Our focus sound this week is /g/ as in gorilla.  This week’s word wall words are: white, big, go, there, no.

In math we are studying Solid Shapes.  We will not test on this chapter.  Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home.

We have added grammar rules 17 & 18, {using them and they}. We are constantly reviewing rules that we have already learned this year.  We started ABC order a while back and the children have done fabulous with it! Please be sure and go over DOL paper that is sent home each night.  Remember that I chose one sentence from each day for our DOL grade on Friday.

Please remember to write a note when your child is ready to take an AR test.  Everyone should have taken at least three tests by Friday.  Let me know if you have any questions.

In other news~

Tuesday, February 8th   Book orders are due.

Thursday, February 10th we will have Spring Pictures.  Children do not have to wear uniforms but must adhere to MPS dress code policies.

First Grade Community Spirit Project!!

Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Center's

Gulf Coast's Adopt a Bird

Experts from Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research rehabilitate oiled wildlife following the Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico.  Please help us adopt a bird, or two, or three! We are collecting money to help with the bird rescue after the recent oil spill.  Hopefully our sweet little firsties are helping out around the house trying to earn some extra money. While we certainly don’t want them to donate all of their money, if everyone donated just a little, we could adopt a bird!

AAA   Happy Valentine’s Day!!   AAA
